Visitors recognize the beauty of downtown

It was with a sense of deficiency I read The Olympian's story covering the Olympia Planning Commission public hearing on amending provisions of the comprehensive plan to allow increased heights of buildings in sections of downtown.

Though it was noted attendees who testified were roughly 3-1 opposed to the amendments, the story's quotes were more than 3-1 from speakers in favor.

Missing were comments by developer Sandy Desner with practical, economic objections.

How about two attorneys with questions of legality? Nor were comments by visitor bureau staff of out-of-towners' amazement at the great physical beauty we have preserved.

Where were the statements by an ex-planning commissioner questioning the "perceived" notion of revenue compared to long-term loss of the priceless waterfront?

Although the hearing was well-attended, it's obvious only a slice of residents was represented, so more facts covered by the newspaper story would have been pertinent.

Many Olympians still don't believe the City Council would seriously consider jeopardizing the city's unique setting. I applaud the recent editorial urging citizens to get involved in helping influence the outcome of this important issue.
