Dear Friends of the Waterfront,

Please put me on any mailing list you may have -- I'd like to help change the city's short-sighted approach to waterfront development.

At the moment I'm out of town -- in Geneva (SW) to be exact, where *all* of the waterfront is public.
While I appreciate (and fully agree with) the ecological and social arguments for restricting private development of the waterfront, I don't think the economic argument has been made clearly enough.  (I'm an economist.)

The small loss in property values resulting from restrictions will be more than offset, in the long run, by the increased value of all the property that benefits from access.  In addition, waterfront amenities will make more people want to live near the center and work against sprawl -- which is also an economic issue.  I see this here in Geneva quite vividly.

Anyway, enough soapboxing.  I think narrow interests have had too much influence on city policy, and I hope your organization will be able to offset it.

I'll be back in Olympia in June and will be happy to help out if I can.
