(Letter to the Editor sent to The Olympian May 14, 2002, with a copy to the City Council)

Let us not wall ourselves off from each other. Let us not create dead zones in Olympia's lovely water edged downtown.

The city council is about to allow six story buildings along 4th and 5th Ave and our waterfront. We must say no to energy blocks in our city's free flowing areas! In vistas of water we find calm. In beholding the Capitol dome we encounter architectural splendor.

Ideally nothing would be built to block these panoramas. The city would vote to buy the land and do nothing. Because in nothing there is a bountiful something - space to breathe, sights to inspire.

At a time in our nation of being suffocated with development, the unique ly livable town of Olympia could choose to leave room for whole community living, not for a few living in condos.

If the zoning changes happen you won't like the results. You won 't like the monolithic walled intrusions into the visual enjoyment of the water and Capitol dome. You won't like feeling closed off. You will wonder who let it happen.

The city council is about to let waterfront preservation end on May 21 at 7PM at City Hall. Will you be there to say NO to walling off vistas we desperately need for our collective mind-body-spirit?

With the demise of common open ground comes the demise of the communal soul. Olympians are at the brink of allowing decisions to be made which will have long-term detrimental effects to our community's overall health and well-being.

Sincerely,

Virginia Frost
