City should purchase waterfront property
The comprehensive plan should embody a long-range view for Olympia's future. The challenge is to prepare in a way that is most beneficial to all the people. Our city will grow greatly in the coming years. As our economy improves, the city should look forward to acquiring the blocks between Capitol Lake and Puget Sound from Water Street to the bridges. Today, the Olympia Community Center is bustling with activity. In the future, an Olympia waterfront park and small boat center should be added. The area on the isthmus should be open to all, and the waterfront where the Yacht Club and Bayview Market now stand would be a welcome port for city visitors. For now, do nothing. At the very least, leave the zoning across the isthmus as it is. There is plenty of time to allow adequate public visioning and develop a more open, people-oriented plan. Mary Stuart Lux, Olympia |
