Dear Editor:

As the public becomes more educated about the proposed re-zone -- Amendment 1 tothe Olympia comprehensive plan -- opposition is growing to the amendment, which wouldraise the height limits for buildings on or adjacent to downtown waterfront.

One of the groups opposing the planning commission's recommendation is the ThurstonCounty Democrats, who, at their convention on April 20th passed the following resolution:

"Be it resolved that the Thurston County Democrats urge Olympia City Council to keep the current height limits for buildings around Percival landing and the waterfront area."

The Olympia Heritage Commission has written a letter to the city in opposition to the plan.

The commission presents a detailed analysis of the proposed re-zone in relation to the comprehensive plan and the environmental impact statement.

Also, the League of Women Voters and the Bigelow Highlands Neighborhood Association have added their voices to those in opposition.

A wise decision on building around the waterfront of our state capital city requires knowledgeable public input, and a vision for the distant future, not just the economics of the coming decade.

The Planning Commission amendment will be presented to the City Council at its May21st meeting at City Hall, 900 Plum St..

Be there!

Mary Murphy, Olympia
