Dear Editor:

Olympia's waterfront is for everyone, not just a few

I completely agree that downtown Olympia would benefit from market rate (nonsubsidized) housing.

In fact, I fall into the demographic group that these units will attract.

What I don't understand is why it has to be directly adjacent to the shoreline.

Wouldn't a building that is set back a block or two from the shoreline have the same spectacular views from the upper floors?

Wouldn't that housing be more desirable if an accessible waterfront was available and suitable to a wide range of activities?

I have been an active supporter of Heritage Park, Percival Landing, the Farmers Market and other projects that have made downtown Olympia a destination and not just a drive-through city.

I can't believe all of that work could be thrown away -- that large chunks of our shoreline could be sold to private interests and made inaccessible to anyone who chooses, for whatever reason, not to live downtown.

Olympia is the state capital and the county seat.

The downtown shoreline is not just for downtown residents of the city. It belongs to anyone who chooses to visit.

So regardless of where you live, please let the Olympia City Council know you want the shoreline available for everyone.
